What type of Anaesthesia is used?
The type of Anaesthesia administered will depend on the type of surgery that you are undergoing.
It will vary from a General Anesthetic to Regional or Local Anesthetic.
In a Regional Anesthetic, only that part of your body that the surgeon is operating on
is frozen. In a Local Anesthetic the surgeon injects the Local Anesthetic into the very
localized area on which they are operating. The anesthetist can give you medications through
an intravenous line that will make you drowsy and not remember being in the Operating Room.
Often the Anesthetist can inject Local Anesthetic during the procedure that will keep
you comfortable for many hours after the Surgery. In consultation with your Surgeon and/or
Anesthetist you can decide on the type of Anesthetic that will be administered to you.
Regardless of the type of Anesthetic given, oxygen saturation, blood pressure and EKG
are routinely monitored.
